Book of John

Contributor - Teresa Moon

John’s ultimate purpose in his Gospel is to explain that Jesus is God—and also fully man. He tells us of both His eternal nature and humanity. That we might “believe”— Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name - John 20:31.

For the next few months, we will be learning and highlighting the significance and uniqueness of Jesus eternal nature as well as His humanity.

John 2:13-17
Both the sellers of sacrificial animals and the money changers were using the Passover requirements to profit personally; some from sales and some from fees charged to exchange currency for temple coins.  Jesus, angry but self-controlled, drove them out of his Father's house.  His Father's house was to be a place of worship, where all hearts were to be focused on Him alone; never to be used for personal gain.

The irony of this incident is that by chasing worldly wealth, the sellers and money changers were profiting financially while at the same time missing out on something much more valuable;  the benefits that can only come from true worship.

How do we profit when we wholeheartedly worship God?

We experience peace

Philippians 4:4-7 ESV

Rejoice in the Lord always, again I will say, rejoice.  Let your reasonableness be known to everyone.  The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

We have hope

Psalm 42:11 ESV

Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me?  Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God.

We know love

Psalm 63:3-4 ESV

Because your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise you.  So I will bless you as long as I live;  in your name I will lift up my hands.

We find strength

Psalm 149.:6 ESV

Let the high praises of God be in their throats and two-edged swords in their hands.

We have help

Psalm 28:7 ESV

The Lord is my strength and my shield;  in him my heart trusts, and I am helped;  my heart exults, and with my song I give thanks to him.

We find forgiveness

Psalm 51:1-2 ESV

Have mercy on me, O god, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions.  Wash me thoroughly from iniquity and cleanse me from my sin!

We are defended

Psalm 18:3 ESV

I call up the Lord who is worthy to be praised, and I am saved from my enemies.

Weekly Reflection:

Never let the things of this world, whose value is fleeting,  rob God of His due worship and praise.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, we give you praise.  You alone are worthy...nothing this world has to offer can begin to compare to you.  In you we find hope, peace and love.  You are are defender and our strength. We thank you for your forgiveness, mercy and your ever present help.  If we could only love you as much as you love us..... Amen
