Book of John
Contributor - Teresa Moon
John’s ultimate purpose in his Gospel is to explain that Jesus is God—and also fully man. He tells us of both His eternal nature and humanity. That we might “believe”— Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name - John 20:31.
For the next few months, we will be learning and highlighting the significance and uniqueness of Jesus eternal nature as well as His humanity.
"Come, see a man who told me all that I ever did. Can this be the Christ?"
John 4:29 ESV
When thinking about the divine nature of God, one would never think to omit the fact that God is all-knowing. We might though, fail in understanding the full scope of His knowledge. Have we reduced God's knowledge to just "oversight", thinking he has a general idea about what is going on with me, or am I fully aware that He knows every possible detail of my life...past, present and future?
In this life, we will never be able to fully understand the magnitude of God's knowledge; it is important however, that we understand what God knows about us. This is critical in leading us to a place of repentance and helping us grow in our love for and trust in, Him.
Take a few minutes today and read Psalm 139. In this Psalm, David speaks of the many ways God now us:
He knows our activities
Psalm 139:2a ESV
You know when I sit down and when I rise up.
He knows our behavior
Psalm 139:3 ESV
You search out my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways.
He knows our thoughts
Psalm 139:2b ESV
You discern my thoughts from afar.
He knows our words
Psalm 139:4 ESV
Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O Lord, you know it altogether.
He knows our bodies
Psalm 139:13-14a ESV
For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.
He knows our days
Psalm 139:16b ESV
In your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.
He knows our hearts
Psalm 139:23-24 ESV
Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!
Weekly Reflection:
Indeed, God knows all about us; every obvious thing and the things that we hide deep beneath the surface. Acknowledging this attribute of God's nature will remind us of how awesome he is and how much we need him.
Prayer:
Father, in every way and in every moment, you are worthy of praise. Search our hearts God and show us the hidden things...the things we don't want to acknowledge about ourselves and the sins we fail to see. Change us God and make us more like you. We love you and we are grateful that you are an all-knowing God. Amen
