Book of John

Contributor - Teresa Moon

John’s ultimate purpose in his Gospel is to explain that Jesus is God—and also fully man. He tells us of both His eternal nature and humanity. That we might “believe”— Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name - John 20:31.

For the next few months, we will be learning and highlighting the significance and uniqueness of Jesus eternal nature as well as His humanity.

"If I alone bear witness about myself, my testimony is not true.  There is another who bears witness about me, and I know that the testimony that he bears about me is true.   You sent to John, and he has borne witness to the truth".  John 5:31-33 ESV

This passage challenges me in many ways regarding my witness.  Does my unspoken witness (my actions and lifestyle) indicate that I have a personal relationship with Jesus?  Does my spoken witness testify to the truth of who Jesus is and mankind's need of a savior?  Is my witness consistent and reflecting of a life in pursuit of holiness?

If you, like me, are concerned that your witness is authentic, helping to build the kingdom and pleasing to God, what are some guidelines for us to keep in mind?

Witnessing should be......

An act of obedience that brings glory to God

Matthew 5:16 ESV

In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

Given with love and humility

1 Peter 3:15 ESV

...but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect.

Personal

Psalm 66:16 ESV

Come and hear, all you who fear God, and I will tell what he has done for my soul.

Declaring the good news

Mark 16:15 ESV

And he said to the, "God into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation..

Led by the Holy Spirit

Acts 1:8 ESV

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.

Given unashamedly

2 Timothy 1:8  ESV

Therefore, do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord, nor of me his prisoner, but share in suffering for the gospel by the power of God.

Joyful in anticipation

Luke 15:7  ESV

Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no reptenance.

Weekly Reflection:

Our witness is powerful!  What a joy to be able to participate in the work of the Lord by sharing the good news with a lost world.   Our desire should be to carry out our witness remembering who we serve and who we hope to reach for Jesus.

Prayer:

Father, we each have a  unique and personal testimony. We pray that the Holy Spirit will equip us and guide us as we share with others.  Help us to always have a heart of love for the lost world and may we not be blinded to the opportunities that you put before us.  We love you and look to please you in all we do.  Amen
