Book of John

Contributor - Teresa Moon

John’s ultimate purpose in his Gospel is to explain that Jesus is God—and also fully man. He tells us of both His eternal nature and humanity. That we might “believe”— Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name - John 20:31.

For the next few months, we will be learning and highlighting the significance and uniqueness of Jesus eternal nature as well as His humanity.

“Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.”

John 6:35 ESV

Human survival is dependent on two things…food and water.  A person can survive without food for a few weeks and without water for a few days.  Ultimately, a person deprived of either will face organ failure and certain death.

“Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.””

John 4:10 ESV

Jesus refers to himself as the bread of life and the living water.  In the same way that food and water satisfies our physical needs in order to survive,  salvation through belief in Jesus satisfies our spiritual need and assures us of eternal life.

Jesus doesn't just satisfy this desperate need of salvation…in addition, because he is so amazing, he satisfies in countless other ways.

To name just a few, Jesus satisfies:

Our Need for Guidance

Isaiah 58:11 ESV

“And the LORD will guide you continually and satisfy your desire in scorched places and make your bones strong; and you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail.”

Isaiah 58:11 ESV

Our Need for Friendship

John 15:15 ESV

“No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you.”

Our Need for Comfort

2 Corinthians 1:3-4 ESV

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.”

Our Need for Peace

Ephesians 2:14 ESV

“For he himself is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in his flesh the dividing wall of hostility”

Our Need for Provision

Philippians 4:19 ESV

“And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.”

Our Need for Unconditional Love

Romans 8:38-39 ESV

“For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Our need for Contentment

Philippians 4:11-12 ESV

“Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned, in whatever situation I am, to be content. I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need.”

Our Need for Joy

Psalm 16:11 ESV

“You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.”

Our Need for Healing

Psalm 147:3

“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.”

Weekly Reflection:

“Take a few quiet moments to sit with Jesus and reflect on this week’s readings. Notice where you felt His guidance, comfort, and peace in your everyday life. Thank Him for the ways He has met your needs, and ask the Holy Spirit to deepen your trust and joy in Him in the week ahead.”

Prayer:

“Jesus, Bread of Life, thank You for meeting me in every place of need this week. You see my hunger for guidance, comfort, peace, and joy, and You never turn me away. Teach me to come to You first, to trust Your heart when I don’t understand Your ways, and to rest in Your faithful love. Fill me with Your Spirit so that my life reflects Your goodness to those around me. In Your precious name I pray, amen.”
